It's over, it's done. I'm in Mexico now.

I've been other places, too..

What Trip?

November 1996, I took a five week holiday with my buddy and ex-colleague, Luther. It was the longest holiday I had taken since I was 14 (if you count part time summer jobs), and the first time I had ever really traveled around with a backpack, staying in hostels. I liked it, and during one of our interminable conversations while driving up the coast, I tried to come up with one good solid reason not to quit my job and travel for a few years. Since I couldn't find any, the decision was clear: next spring, I would quit my job and load up the backpack.

Well, it didn't work out quite that way: I became vertebraically challenged, and went under the knife for a herniotomy in May. It took until October to be well enough to travel around and carry a backpack, and I quit my job on October 10, flew to DC on the 26th (with a small side trip in between), bought a Jeep, and met Luther and Mariska in New York City on November 10th.

The excuse for this trip is that Luther is moving stuff from his stepmom's place in Rochester, NY to his mother's place in Eugene, OR. Basically, though, we're just wandering from coast to coast, stopping in interesting places (or places where we know that friends or relatives will give us floor space for free). And, we've got this laptop with us, so we'll be updating as we go.

The map at the top of this page shows the approximate route we've taken (like I said, we're not trying to solve the traveling salesman problem here), and the odometer readings lead to journal entries.

Enjoy, and send me some email if we're going to be passing through your town.
